Weddings are steeped in tradition, from the bride wearing white to both bride and groom wearing their wedding bands on the ring finger of their left hands. Even if you’re planning on having a contemporary wedding, you may want to integrate some traditions into your ceremony or reception.
Traditional Bellingham Wedding Venues
Because many couples view their wedding as a religious ceremony, they want to get married in a church. There are many beautiful churches in Bellingham including the breath-taking Assumption Catholic Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal and Sacred Heart. There are many other beautiful churches in Bellingham, Lynden, Ferndale and surrounding areas.
Non-traditional wedding venues are also in ample supply. Consider the beautiful Ferry Terminal, Broadway Hall or for a smaller gathering, the Squalicum Boat House. The Boat House is located at the gorgeous Zuanich Park at Squalicum Harbor.
Something Old, Something New
Most people have heard that the bride should always wear “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” This tradition comes from and Old English rhyme and is rich in symbolism. The “something old” represents continuity while the “something new” is a symbol of optimism for the future. The “borrowed” item is symbolic of borrowed happiness and the “blue” item represents purity, love and fidelity. Some add the term, “And a penny in your shoe” to the rhyme. In the original rhyme, the bride was told to put a “six-pence” in her shoe. It was believed to bring wealth. It has been since be replaced by the more modern term of a “penny.”
Bride Wearing White & Other Fashion Traditions
It is traditional for western brides to wear a white wedding dress. This custom was made popular by Queen Victoria in the 19th century and is still in practice today. In eastern cultures, brides often choose to wear red.
Brides also often wear white veils, a custom that traces back to Rome. Romans feared that evil spirits were jealous of the bride’s happiness, so the bride would wear a veil as she walked down the aisle to disguise herself from these spirits. By doing this, she felt that she would be able to avoid any ill will they would bring upon her or her new marriage.
In more recent years, other colors have become popular for bride’s attire. Blush pink or cream are very popular, but bold choices such as ruby red or hot pink have also been seen on the runway and walking down the aisle.
Queen Victoria is also responsible for the incorporation of lace in wedding attire. Her beautiful lace gown was the envy of every young bride. Once news of Queen Victoria’s attire spread, brides started to mimic her bold look. Since then, lace has become one of the most popular wedding dress elements.
Ceremonial Kiss
Even the customary kiss during the wedding ceremony has ancient roots. In Roman times, kissing was a legal bond used to seal contracts. Traditionally, the bride and groom would not have kissed prior to the wedding ceremony. Today, most couples choose to share their first kiss as a married couple at the end of their ceremony.
